Comments about happiness

Some of you still haven't blogged about happiness, that is, haven't answered the first question from the pre-discussion in the unit on happiness. Please do so as I am going to ask you to print out the comments that you've received from your classmates and bring them to class on Tuesday so you can talk about them.

REMINDER: You need to post a comment to at least two of your classmates. Please check if you haven't posted any comments, do so. And, make sure that everybody receives comments.

Another lecture

If you are still having difficulties finding public lectures, in Saturday's Gazette there is an ad for a lecture "Water Resources Implications of a Changing Climate" by The Global Environmental and Climate Change Centre at McGill. The lecture is on April 30 from 6:00-7:00. I'll bring the complete information on Monday.

Happiness

As our next unit (probably starting Tuesday) is Happiness, I'd like to ask you to do two things in advance:
1. Free write your answer to question 1 on page 225 on your blog.
2. There is a quiz about happiness on the following site: http://www.theglobeandmail.com/v5/content/features/quiz/happiness/index.html
Do the quiz and get the results but I would also ask you to print the questions and bring them to class so you can discuss your answers. There are 24 questions. Please don't just print 24 pages or so but copy, paste, reduce the font, do whatever it takes to reduce the amount of paper used! Save the trees!!!

Media blogging

One more post for today. Oops, actually it's a new day (Sunday). I am pretty happy with your article summaries and your reactions to the topic although some of you didn't express your opinion. So, the content was good, but I find that you do not edit your writing. Some of (a lot of) your grammar and spelling was not correct. Regarding the editing for grammar, when you finish whatever you are writing, take a short break and come back to it. Read it again out loud after a few minutes and see if you can spot any mistakes. And, regarding your spelling, take time to check it. At this level, there shouldn't be any spelling mistakes.

Short asnwer questions (SAQ)

Hi everyone,

I'd like to remind you once again about the homework for Monday. I suppose some of you have already started on the SAQ, but for those who haven't, this is what you need to do:

1. Choose one of the questions (1, 2, 3 or 5 on p. 161);

2. Analyze what the question is asking you to do. Give attention to key words (explain, agree/disagree).

3. Look in your notes for all the material we covered in the unit on male/female communication pattern. See what information could be used to answer the selected question. You might need to integrate information from various sources.

4. Make a mini-plan of the answer.

You are going to write in class on Monday. Come to class with the plan, and hand it in at the end of the class together with your first draft of the answer.

Please note that this type of questions is similar to the essay questions. It is a little shorter, usually one to two paragraphs long, and there is no thesis statement as in the essay questions, but the first paragraph starts with a topic sentence, which is basically the rephrased question.

Have a nice Sunday!

Tuesday, April 15, 2008

Hi everyone,

Hi everyone,

So, I'm finally posting something. As I said, I was very busy over the weekend, and I 'm sorry about that. I'm going to read your media blogging, but I just want to remind you that you need to respond to two of your friends' summaries and their reactions. Once I read your summaries, I will post something again.
